Capitán Bellamy
Daniel Defoe, escribiendo bajo el seudónimo de capitán Charles Johnson, escribió lo que se convirtió el primer texto histórico al uso sobre la piratería. A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates. De acuerdo al Jolly Roger de Patrick Pringle, el reclutamiento de piratas era más efectivo entre los desempleados, los esclavos fugitivos, y los criminales deportados. El ancho mar favorecía una nivelación instantánea de las desigualdades de clases. Defoe relata que un pirata llamado capitán Bellamy dio este discurso al capitán de un mercante que había capturado como trofeo. El capitán del mercante acababa de declinar una invitación para unirse a los piratas.
Siento que no te permitan recuperar tu bergantín, porque me resisto a hacer dañoo a
nadie, cuando no es en mi ventaja; al diablo con el bergantín, hemos de hundirlo, y
que sirva de escarmiento. Aunque eres un vil rufián, como lo son todos los que se
someten al gobierno de las leyes que los ricos han creado para su propia seguridad;
ya que a los que han parido cobardes no tienen el valor para defender de otra
manera lo que consiguen con bribonerías; pero al diablo con todos vosotros: al
diablo con tu hatajo de arteros bribones, y contigo, que los sirves, y con tu pandilla de cabeza huecas de corazón de gallina. Ellos nos vilifican, esos infames, cuando sólo existe esta diferencia, ellos roban a los pobres bajo la cobertura de la ley, ciertamente, y nosotros saqueamos a los ricos bajo la protección de nuestro propio valor. ¿No has de preferir convertirte en uno de nosotros, antes que pordiosear tras estos villanos por prebendas?
Cuando el capitán replicó que su conciencia no le permitía romper las leyes de Dios y los hombres, el pirata Bellamy continuó:
Eres un bribón de conciencia diabólica, yo soy un príncipe libre, y tengo tanta
autoridad para hacer la guerra contra el mundo entero, como aquel que tiene una
vela de cien naves en el mar, y un ejército de 10.000 hombres en el campo; y ésto
es lo que mi conciencia me dice: no cabe discusión con rufianes gimoteadores de esta
ralea, que permiten a sus superiores patearlos a placer por la cubierta.
¡BÚSQUESE UD. UN REVOLVER!
«¡Búsquese Ud. un revolver! Entiende Ud. bien lo que digo. Búsquese Ud. un revolver. Cuanto más pronto mejor. Cómprelo, quítelo o róbelo. La cuestión es que Ud. debe andar armado. ¿Ud. cree por ventura que la revolución social se va a hacer con serpentinas como en los días de carnaval? ¿Ud. cree que los capitalistas van a entregar las tierras y las fábricas, como entregan sus hijas a los millonarios? ¿Es Ud. tanto tonto que cree en una posible armonía entre patrones y obreros? ¿No ve Ud. que día a día, en todas partes del mundo, cuando los obreros exigen alguna mejora aparecen soldaditos cargados de rifles y bayonetas? ¿No vio Ud. que en la huelga de los compañeros tranviarios andaba todo el ejército amparando a los traidores? Bien. Si esto ocurre cuando se hace un reclamo o se solicita alguna mejora, que en buenas cuentas no es nada, ¿qué será cuando exijamos el derecho a la tierra, a la vida, a la libertad? Piense bien, lo que le digo. Búsquese Ud. un revolver y ejercítese lo bastante. Hágase Ud. un blanco para que dispare. . Dibuje en él la cabeza de Astorquiza, de Zañartu, de Gonzalo Bulnes o la suya si le parece… Dispare y dispare . Ud. prepárese para la Revolución que ya está encima. Aconseje a sus demás camaradas que hagan lo mismo. Aquellos que le hablan a Ud. de “evolución pacífica” y de “soluciones armónicas” con la clase capitalista, le engañan a Ud. miserablemente. ¿No ve, Ud., que en Rusia los trabajadores tuvieron que armarse para derrocar a todos los tiranos? No ve, Ud., como hoy viven a sus anchas, disfrutando de toda clase de comodidades? Hace más de cien años que Ud. ha soportado pacíficamente toda clase de humillaciones, y ¿qué beneficios ha obtenido de parte de sus amos? El miserable cuartucho en que vive y que Ud. paga a precio de oro, las enfermedades que aniquilan prematuramente a Ud. y a sus hijos, las guerras que siembran el hambre y el dolor en los hogares y las metrallas que Ud. recibe cuando exige un poco de alimento y un poco de justicia para su familia e hijos… Eso, todo eso es el pago a sus desvelos y sacrificios…. Convénzase, Ud., de una vez. Búsquese Ud. un revolver. Cuanto más pronto, mejor. Cómprelo, quítelo o róbelo. La cuestión es que Ud. debe Andar armado. Cuando la clase obrera, consciente y armada exija sus derechos a la vida y a la libertad, entonces verá Ud. como caen los tronos y los tiranos. Mientras Ud. siga gritando como tonto por las calles, pidiendo pan y justicia, verá Ud. como llueven las balas sobre su cabeza. Termino. Buscándose Ud. un revolver y aconsejando a los demás a prepararse para la Revolución, verá Ud. renacer una nueva aurora para el mundo. ¡Búsquese Ud., un revolver!».
